Skilled Migration

Looking to work in Australia but don’t know where to start? Working with Four Corners simplifies the visa application process & avoids delays. We offer one point of contact, & one source of information for both you & any of your stakeholders, plus ongoing updates on each working visa Australia application.

Working Visa options

Whether you wish to make Australia home or hope to gain work experience in another country, a work visa is an ideal way to experience Australia.

You may be eligible for multiple work visas. We can guide you into suitable visas, explain the rules about working in Australia & suggest pathways to permanent residency.

There are four main types of Australian work visas: Two are temporary & only allowing a limited stay in Australia, while the other two are for permanent residency, with many of the benefits of citizenship.

Temporary Visa

  • Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) was formerly known as the Temporary Work Visa (subclass 457). Designed to temporarily bring in skilled workers to Australia to perform needed jobs, for either two or four years depending on the worker’s occupation, an Australian employer needs to sponsor you before you can apply for this visa.
  • Working holiday (subclass 462 and 417). Designed to let younger people work while taking extended vacations in Australia, a limited number of these visas are awarded each year. The limits, & which working holiday visa you can apply for, depends on country of origin.

Permanent Visa

  • Employer Sponsored Work Visas (subclass 186 & 187). An Australian business can sponsor non-residents to get permanent residency. A business might sponsor an employee who’s already in Australia on a 457, TSS or Working Holiday Visa, or might sponsor someone who’s still overseas.
  • Skilled Migration Visas (subclass 189 & 190). 189 visa is for overseas residents who want to apply for permanent residency without being sponsored by an Australian business. Applicants register an expression of interest, & are selected based on their occupation & ranking on a points test. A 190 visa allows skilled workers to live in Australia permanently & apply for Australian citizenship (if eligible).

How do I apply to work in Australia?

Strict requirements must be met by individuals & businesses before they can nominate people for these visas.

Some require you to apply for them while outside of Australia, or while in Australia on another type of visa. Others have additional age requirements/limitations. Employing the services of a professional migration specialist to navigate this process can save you time & money.

Lodge a visa application through the Australian Department of Immigration & Border Protection website, or hire a migration agent to advise you about the process & lodge the application for you.

To work in Australia as a skilled migrant, you can also lodge an expression of interest through SkillSelect. An EOI isn’t the same as a visa application, & is free, but it will enable Australian employers & governments to find out about your skills through the database. An employer could then invite you to apply for a visa. You can also use a migration agent to submit an EOI.

If any further information or documents are requested after application, you’ll need to provide these within the time given. Remember to let the Department of Immigration know if your circumstances change, such as changes to your home address, marital status or employment status.

Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189 & 190)

When you send an EOI through SkillSelect, you’re letting the government know you’re interested in moving to Australia. Even if no business nominates you for a 168 or 187 visa, the government might still invite you to apply for a 189 or 190 visa if you are under the age of 45, & have not been sponsored or nominated by an employer, or state or territory government.

In order to send an EOI, your occupation must be on the skilled occupations list. After your EOI is received, you will be ranked against other applicants with a points test (you need to score at least 60 pts to receive an invitation).

If you qualify, & there’s room for your occupation, you will be invited to apply for a 189 or 190  Skilled Independent visa. This Skilled Independent visa, as well as the 186 & 187 visa streams, are all permanent residency visas.

What occupations are eligible for a working visa in Australia?

There are many opportunities to work in Australia, & gain Australian working visas.

Find the full list of eligible skilled occupations and their categories here.

Different visa types have different occupation requirements. Ie: 186 & 187 skilled visas have different eligible occupations, & you will need to qualify as a skilled worker in order to get a 457 visa, but don’t necessarily need to be skilled in order to qualify for a working holiday visa.

Within the skilled occupations list, there are two categories. The category your occupation is in will determine your visa conditions.

Some of the occupations on the list include:

  • Accountants
  • Surgeons
  • Electricians
  • Teachers
  • Architects
  • Cabinetmakers
  • Counsellors
  • Fitters
  • ICT workers
  • Gardeners
  • Librarians
  • Registered nurses
  • Medical laboratory technicians
  • Mechanical engineers

How long is the process

Visa application processing times can range from weeks to over a year, depending on the visa type/situation. Times can also vary due to factors such as: number of applications, incomplete applications, time taken to check supplied information or receive information from external agencies, time of year, & complexity of the case.

You can lodge a visa application yourself (lodge online to streamline the processing of your application). If you lack confidence about the process, or your application is complex, you can hire a migration agent who will help you lodge a visa application, advise you, prepare documents & liaise with the Department of Immigration on your behalf.
